Saint Mathew Gam

I was born in Vietnam in 1813 in a devout Christian family. I started to study at the seminary at Lai Thieu. But as I was the first son of my family, I felt obliged to go back home and get married. I wed a woman from our village and we had four children. But I cheated on her with another woman, and I felt terrible afterwards. I was very grateful  when she forgave me. This was the beginning of my life as a true Christian. I was very committed to my faith and began to help the missionaries. But when the emperor started to persecute Christians, the authorities began to investigate my involvement in helping the missionaries. I was arrested, but I refused to deny Jesus. Therefore I was beaten and imprisoned. I was executed at the age of 34.
